PZ20 Carburetor Diagram, Parts and Troubleshooting Guide

PZ20-style carburetors are used on many small four-stroke ATVs, dirt bikes, pit bikes and go-karts. The name “PZ20” describes a carburetor family, not a guarantee that every version has the same mounting, cable, choke or jetting. Compare the original part before ordering or adjusting.

Fitment checklist

  • Equipment year, make and model
  • Complete engine code, not displacement alone
  • Engine-side mounting dimensions
  • Air-filter-side diameter and available clearance
  • Throttle-cable end, cap thread and travel
  • Choke type and operating direction
  • Fuel-inlet position and hose size
  • Vent, overflow and drain arrangement

Troubleshooting by symptom

Starts only with the choke

Check for restricted pilot passages, insufficient fuel flow, intake leaks and incorrect idle adjustment. Do not assume a larger jet is the first solution.

Fuel leaks from the overflow

Turn off the fuel. Inspect the float, needle, seat, contamination and bowl venting. Do not operate the engine until the leak is corrected.

High or hanging idle

Confirm the throttle slide closes fully, the cable has free play and the intake is sealed. A binding cable or intake leak can imitate an adjustment problem.

Bogging under throttle

Verify fuel flow, air-filter condition, exhaust configuration, ignition and valve condition before changing jetting. Make one change at a time and record the result.

Safety: Work away from flames and hot surfaces. Disconnect the spark-plug lead before removal, check for leaks after installation and verify full throttle return before riding.
